photo from Pinecrest Ridge.
Text on back reads: "This photo taken from the Pinecrest Ridge, shows the old Drill Shed, the Iron Bridge at the end of Noble's Lane, and Russell's pines on the crest of the far hill. The whirlpool, immediately below the bridge was deep and dangerous at that time and several drownings occurred there with people unfamiliar with the waters, but it has continued to be a favourite picnic spot.
The bridge shown here, a replacement for an earlier one, was built in 1878 or thereabouts, refloored with heavy planking several times, and finally totally renewed with acement and stone structure in 1991.
The Drill Shed was built around 1866 to house Halton Rifles, a detachment of the 20th Infantry Regiment. This Norval Company' sent 42 volunteers to Niagara to resist the Fenians, with capt. James Curry in charge and Dr. Sam Webster as their Medical Officer. They were away for 6 weeks, farm crops were neglected, but there were no casualties. The grateful government paid them 50 cents a day, and the Municipal authorities added 25 cents to their pay. Forty years later that grateful Government gave them a medal and a section of land in New Ontario - (at that time, our frozen north).
The more things change, the more they are the same!
