Fatal Carelessness.
A Brampton Woman Shoots Her Sister With
a Revolver"She Didn't Know
Was Loaded."
One of those sad events which result from the careless handling of firearms, and from which the public are being constantly warned, occurred at Brampton on Saturday evening last. It appears that while Jas. Fletcher, an employee of Haggart Bros., was in his house about 5 o'clock on the evening named, his wife took a revolver out of her husband's coat pocket in the presence of her sister, Mrs. Wm. Vodden, who was sitting close at the time. Mr. Fletcher had purchased the revolver for the purpose of shooting a dog, and had put two cartridges in it. He had discharged one the day previous and allowed the other to remain, the putting in of which had by some means escaped his memory. He consequently led his wife to believe that the weapon was unloaded, and she, doubtless from curiosity, in handling it raised the trigger and snapped it, when it went off, shooting Mrs. Vodden. The ball entered her breast, and she died on Monday morning from internal hemorrhage. The ball penetrated the stomach, and from symptoms must have impinged on the spine.
