Death of an Esquesing Pioneer.
On Thursday, 21st of March, there died at lot 13, concession 6, Esquesing, one of the township's oldest residents, Mr. Joseph Standish. Seventy-seven years ago his father left Queen's county, Ireland, and his wife and his children came to Canada and remained for two years in the Lower Provinces. They then moved to the farm above noted, and which was his home continuously for three quarters of a century. Forty nine years ago the deceased married Caroline Cook, who survives him. Their children were ten in number. Only eight of these are now living: Joseph, of Halifax; William, of Manitoba; Richard, of Erin; George, of Seattle; Clark of Calgary; James, who has charge of the homestead; Mrs. Hunt, of Grand Valley, and Miss Sarah, who resides at the old home. The deceased was one of a family of fifteen, only two of whom are living; Mrs. Frank Standish, of Ashfield, and Mrs. Dr. McCullough, of Esquesing. If the descendants of Joseph Standish were counted it is stated that five hundred would not be an over-estimate of the number. Many of these reside in this locality, while others have moved to more remote sections. - Herald.
