Over Seventy Years a Resident.
The remains of the late Mrs. Francis Dempsey were laid at rest in Fairview Cemetery last Friday afternoon. Mrs. Dempsey had resided in Acton and vicinity perhaps longer than any other citizen. She was born at Grimsby in 1815. Two years later her mother died. When about eight years old her father removed to Esquesing and settled on lot 32, con. 4, Esquesing. The family gave the locality its name. For ever since it has been known as "Swackhamer's Hill." Almost continuously from that time Mrs. Dempsey has been a resident of Acton and vicinity. She enjoyed the esteem of all. Her long life saw many trials. She was thrice bereaved of husbands. Her family always received her devoted care, and, through her industry and motherly oversight, enjoyed much which would otherwise have been denied them. Mr. Dempsey died 17 years ago last February and she has since resided at the home of her son-in-law, Mr. Edward Matthews. For a number of years she had been in delicate health and lately had yearned for the eternal rest which she anticipated, with genuine assurance. Owing to the long distance at which her children reside from here only Mr. Chris. Dempsey, of St. Thomas, and Mr. Alfred Walker, of Waterford, were able to be present at the funeral. Her son, Jacob, of Penetang, spent a week with her previous to her death but was obliged to return home.
