There fell asleep in Jesus early Saturday morning, one of the connecting links of the past and present, in the person of Elizabeth Soper, beloved wife of Paul Cripps, after but a few hours illness.
Mrs. Cripps was the daughter of the late Samuel Soper and was born in St. Catherines 85 years ago. Her husband was born near Hamilton 90 years ago, and well remembers when Hamilton was nothing more than a bush settlement. Both her father's family and husband's family were among the first settlers in these parts. She and her husband were united in marriage 67 years ago last February and took up their residence and have resided ever since in their present home, lot 3, 7th con., Eramosa. We doubt if there is at present in the province a married couple who have lived longer together than had they. They have seen great changes since they first settled here in the then wilderness of bush land with only one very crooked and picturesque road, "The Old York Road," long since passed into history in this neighborhood. Eleven children blessed the union, nine of which are living to-day. They are J. H. Cripps of this place, Mrs. Jas. Stevenson, Manitoba; Mrs. Summerville, of Salonac, Mich.; Mrs. McIntosh, Mrs. Wm. Anderson, Alexander, William and Misses Emma, and Cynthia, all of this place. Besides her husband and children there are a large number of grandchildren and great grandchildren who will mourn the loss. The deceased was a good friend and neighbor, a kind and loving wife and mother and her children may well rise up and call her blessed. She and her venerahble husband were among the first members of the first Disciple church in this part of the county and all her life she has been a devoted Christian wonman. Her funeral on Monday afternoon to Everton Cemetery was one of the largest ever seen here. The service was conducted by the Rev. A. Tovell, of Guelph. The pall-bearers were Messrs. Geo. Graham, Robt. Wansborough, John Black, Wm. Burns, Wm. Tovell and Josiah Boyce. - Media Type
