BURIED IN BRANDON.
Letter from the West Gives Particu-
lars of Death of the Late
John McRae.
The following extracts from a letter from Mr. W. S. Kennedy, an old Acton boy, now residing in Winnipeg, regarding the death of the late John McRae, will be of interest to Acton citizens:
"John McRae had been in Brandon over a month, and was employed in Mr. Andrews' store of general gents' furnishings. John had not been feeling well for some days, and on consulting a doctor, was sent to the hospital on Friday, Aug. 31st, suffering from typhoid. He was conscious at all times and did not appear to be in a serious condition until Friday, Sept. 7th, when two hemorrhages occurred, which made his case critical.
On Friday afternoon we received a telephone message in Winnipeg, and John Henderson and I went out on the next train. We arrived in Brandon at 3 a.m. and went straight to the hospital, where we found McRae perfectly rational, recognizing us immediately. He seemed very bright and did appear to realize his condition to be really critical. He talked freely with us for as long as we were permitted to remain, and bid us good-bye, telling us to call again later in the morning. But at 6.30 John began to sink rapidly, and before we could be summoned he had passed away at seven o'clock, Saturday morning.
Dr. McDonald was in attendance, and all was done by hospital attendants and old Acton friends that could be done. John Matthews was especially solicitous, and insisted on John Henderson and myself staying at his home. The funeral was held Sunday afternoon at two o'clock, interment in Brandon cemetery. The body was taken to John Matthews' house, 448 Eight street, and service was conducted by Rev. R. Q. V. Dickie.
The pall bearers were: John Matthews, Wm. McPhail, Cam. McMillan,W. S. Kennedy, John Henderson, and T. R. Andrews, John's employer.
Among others at the funeral were: Mrs. Wm. McPhail, Mablel McPhail, Mrs. Matthews and Hazel, Mr. and Mrs. J. A. Glover, three of the McGregor boys, Chas. McWhirter, Jim McDougal, Bob Nicklin and Mr. Hurd."
