- Death of Jailer Van Allen.
Wm. Van Allen, Governor of Halton County Jail, died at his residence in the county buildings on Sunday evening. His health had been failing for some time, but he was unable to go out more or less until the 30th ult. An attack of grippe came on and finally pneumonia developed. Mr. Van Allen was born at Toronto and grew to manhood at Oakville. About 50 years ago his father, the late Joshua Van Allen, was appointed jailer, and deceased came with him to Milton as turnkey, a position which he held until the death of his father, more than a quarter of a century ago. The appointment went from father to son. Mr. Van Allen was a model official. Under his superintendence Halton's county jail has always been known to be one of the best managed in Ontario. To his fellow citizens he was as one of the most honorable of men. He was an earnest and sincere Christian and a member of the Methodist church. He left a widow, his second wife, to whom he was married about two years ago, but no children. He was the oldest surviving member of St. Clair Lodge, No. 135 G.R.C., in which he was initiated shortly after it was established in 1860. - Champion - Featured Link
