Notes
Erchless at Oakville was so named for the seat of Clan Chisholm--Erchless Castle standing in Strath Glass at Struy, Inverness-shire, Scotland. Why its owner, R.K. Chisholm, chose this name is a mystery since research has shown no connection between his forbears and the line of chiefs who occupied the castle. (For further details see John and George Chisholm of the Parish of Croy, Inverness-shire, and their descendants and The Mark of Honour.) The house grew gradualy. The north section, built in the 1830's, was most probably the brick store mentioned by Anna Jameson in Winter Stories and Summer Rambles in Canada who passed this way in 1837. The second (middle) section was added 1840 to accomodate the family of R.K.'s family when the house in which they were living was destroyed by fire in January, 1839. The front or south section was added when R.K. became engaged to Flora Matilda Lewis and was finished before their marriage in February, 1858. Details of the adjoining Customs House may be found in Oakville and the Sixteen. R.K. and Flora (or Tilly as she was called) brought up one daughter and four sons at Erchless; also two granddaughters, Edith and Katherine Parrish, when Alice Parrish came back home to live with her parents. When the older generations had died out and the younger scattered to other places the property was placed on sale and bought by Mrs. John A. (Emelda B.) Chisholm in the 1920's.
