CREWSONS CORNERS
The oldest resident of this part of the country passed away last Friday night, when Paul Cripps, who was in his ninety-sixth year, was called to his reward. He was a son of the late John Cripps, who came from Philadelphia, Pa., about the beginning of last century, and settled in Barton township, on the mountain just above Hamilton. Here the subject of this sketch was born in 1814. When in his youth the family moved to Eramosa.
He was married 72 years ago to Elizabeth Soper, daughter of the late John Soper. Mr. and Mrs. Cripps lived happily together for 67 years, when the partner of his joys and sorrows was called home. The family comprised four sons and seven daughters, of whom the following survive; Mrs. Ellen Stevenson, Saskatchewan; Mrs. Alex. McIntosh, Crewsons Corners; Mrs. Wm. Anderson, Acton; Mrs. Robert Somerville, Cedarvale, Mich.; Misses Emma and Cynthia, at home; John H., Erin; Alex., Superintendent of Construction of the Beardmore Co., Acton; and W. R., on the homestead, lot 3, con. 7, Eramosa.
Mr. Cripps was a man of quiet disposition, and enjoyed general esteem. He was one of the original members of the Disciples' Church at Everton, and continued his membership until his death. The funeral on Monday to Everton Cemetery was largely attended. Rev. G. F. C. Welsman, his pastor, conducted the service. The pallbearers were: Messrs. John H., Alexander, William, Edwin and D. Cripps, and Jos. Soper.
