He was a Native of Esquesing and
Once Candidate for House of
Commons
WAS WEALTHY BUSINESS MAN
Mr. S. F. Mackinnon passed away at London, Eng., on Friday last. The remains will be brought to Toronto for interment. Mrs. Mackinnon and Mr. William Guthrie, of the firm of S. F. Mackinnon & Company were at the bedside when the end came. Mr. Mackinnon had been in poor health for some years and had taken the trip to England to recuperate.
Born in the township of Esquesing sixty-eight years ago, Mr. Mackinnon in his early days conducted a retail store at Georgetown. Fire destroyed his premises and he went to Toronto, organizing the firm of Mackinnon, Proctor & McCall. More recently he started S. F. Mackinnon & Company. He was one of Toronto's millionaires.
His widow, formerly Miss MacKay, of Georgetown, one daughter, Mrs. Edward Miles, and two grandsons, Sydney Mackinnon Miles, of Winnipeg, and Lawford R. Miles, of Ottawa, survive.
Mr. Mackinnon had a very high sense of honor in connection with his business affairs. The firm of Mackinnon, Procter & McCall went into financial difficulty, owing large accounts in England. For some time Mr. Mackinnon worked to pay off these liabilities, and succeeded. Going to England he called all the creditors together at a banquet, and beneath the plate of each guest was a check for the amount of his indebtedness. The credit of Mr. Mackinnon then became even more firmly established in the business world, and he was made the recipient of handsome plate.
Twelve years ago he unsuccessfully contested Halton in the Liberal interests against Mr. D. Henderson.
Mr. Mackinnon retired from active business some nine years ago. - Featured Link
