TRAGEDY A FEW MILES FROM
ACTON
On Tuesday of last week John McLelland, of Garafraxa, who left Fergus in a drunken condition to drive home three days before, was found dead on the roadside near Everton. A bottle of whiskey was discovered near his body, and a post mortem examination revealed the fact that his stomach contained a large quantity of whiskey.
The wandering about of his horse hitched to a buggy aroused the suspicions of residents of the locality and upon searching the body of the man was found.
The inquest showed that the unfortunate man was in an advanced stage of tuberculosis. He had a bruise above the eye and on top of the head. He also suffered from a fatty heart. The combination of exposure and injury was the cause of death.
After drinking for a time at Fergus deceased and a companion drove aimlessly for miles over the country. The other man finally found his way home but McLelland met his death.
Thomas McLelland, of Fergus, a brother of the man, went to Guelph, preparatory to attending the inquest into the death of his brother. He got drunk instead and was arrested charged with committing an indecent assault on a married woman, and Monday morning he was sentenced to six months in the Central Prison by Magistrate Watt. - Featured Link
