- Lee to Oakville: "Congratulations." (.R.T.)
Oakville to Lee: "Require assistance. Stokehold making water. Close in."
Lee to Oakville: "Closing in. Can you steam under your own power."
Oakville to Lee: "At reduced speed. Can you put our officer aboard."
Lee to Oakville: "We are sending him back now."
Oakville to Lee: "We are closing you at slow speed."
Lee to Oakville: "Can you make port under your own power. We will rejoin convoy."
Oakville to Lee: "Good hunting."
Lee to Oakville: "Have reported your condition. Proceed slowly."
Oakville to Lee: "We will proceed at utmost speed with safety."
The next morning, they found the Lee and presumably others nearby Jan Van Brakel (Dutch naval vessel..cross between a corvette and a minesweeper) to Oakville: "That was a fine show of courage. Have you no casualties."
Lee to J.V.B.: "Thank you. No casualties."
H.M.S. Churchill came out from Cuba to meet Oakville. At 07.55, she said: "Well done Canada. I have been sent to escort you in, but it looks as if you can still take good care of yourself."
Oakville to Churchill: "Thank you. Our present maximum 12 knots. #2 boiler room about 10 ft of water, but we're holding it in check."
The above signals were in some cases by blinker light, and in some cases by R.T.
This is the conclusion of the interview with Lieut. Cully. He is a very charming, friendly man, but most reticent and not at all verbose. Didn't regard the action as anything special, and was heartily sick and tired of the fuss made about it, and very bored with interviews, although he gave no indication verbally of this. He didn't pay much attention to the exact continuity of happenings and conversations during the action, and there was most likely considerable excitement and tension. All in all, this account is not as detailed and dove-tailed as I would have liked to have had it. - Date Of Event
