Bit of gas evident. Powell shouted down to him that he thought they had a time bomb set. L. saw a half open door with wire oddly placed on it. Afraid of it being a booby trap, he left it alone. Decided to go above. Got up to control room, when Powell shouted down that he thought there were English prisoners aboard. L. went back down to lower deck. Could see nothing, and sub filling up rapidly. Came back up on deck. Sub was down by the stern, and P. had herded them back into conning tower. Germans in bad funk. Told Powell to get prisoners overside. They jumped, then he told P. to jump and jumped himself. When they were about 50 or 60 feet off, the sub went down. Pretty close timing. L. kicked off his shorts in the water, and when they were aboard the U.S.S. Lee, he reported to the captain stark naked. When he climbed aboard 2 big Yanks grabbed him, and started to hustle him off. (The Americans had pulled in some Germans.) His own crewmen rescued him from the zealous Yanks. Had a shower and some sandwiches and then back to the Oakville.
Incidental notes. Lawrence also knocked cold aboard Oakville when he and P. were crouched under the gun.
American destroyer captain senior officer of the convoy.
Current sub tactics apparently are to try and escape pursuit on the surface.
The above report is sketchy, and has losts of blank spaces. Could you ldet me know how it fills out such information as you possess, and give me further instructions?
