The uniforms were paid for by subscription and comprised crimson berets, khaki jackets, and purple armbands. Enrolment was enthusiastic with an estimated 500 men signing on in a two-hour period, the Toronto Daily Star reported on June 21, 1949. The photo was taken with a Brownie camera by 12-year-old Gord O'Reilly.
