- Joy and Geoffrey Smith were married during World War II in Halifax. Geoffrey Smith enlisted in the Royal Canadian Navy Volunteer Reserve in 1941 as an Ordinary Seaman and trained as an ASDIC (Anti-Submarine Detector). He served in the Gulf of St. Lawrence and the North Atlantic in minesweepers and corvettes; he was promoted to Sub-Lieutenant in 1943. Geoffrey and Joy moved to Oakville in the 1980s.
