Wright has lived in Oakville and the ward for 18 years. She has worked in civil service as well as at an environmental company. She has a degree in political science and sociology from the University of Toronto. She has also held vol- unteer positions with various community school and residents groups. Ive been committed to residents in this ward for 18 years, she said Ive always been involved in the community. She also advocates and practices shopping local. She has several issues that shes focusing on in her election campaign, including town spending and tax increases, returning to non- partisan politics and finding solutions to prob- lems that work. I want to get back to open public consulta- tion, not partisan politics, she said. She added she believes the town is just throwing money away. Now that weve bought or built facilities, facilities that I might add werent even worthy of even being a venue for the Pan Am Games, I worry there doesnt seem to be a plan to oper- ate them, she said. Wright said there are municipalities around Oakville that will participate in the 2015 Pan Am Games, hosted by Toronto, but not Oakville. She added that despite the new facilities, the town did not increase ice time, but only man- aged to increase its costs. Wright said a pedestrian bridge in Velleybrook Park was replaced about a year ago with large drops on both sides and no stairs to get onto the bridge. Wright said since 2006, Eighth Line has been re-striped three times and speed bumps have been installed on it to slow down traffic in school zones. The speed bumps, all they have done, instead of having a community solution, the speed bumps have only served to push traffic elsewhere, so theyve created issues for other neighbourhoods, she said. I am very frustrated at what appears to be the throwing away of taxpayer money on issues instead of finding solutions that work. She said an 8.2 per cent property tax increase over the last four years is unacceptable and she would not have voted for it. Wright said people on a fixed income, or those who dont get raises at the rate of infla- tion, cannot be expected to pay the increase. Wright wants council seat back Continued from page 28 Speak up!
