That said, Ward 6 residents can only choose one of them to sit in the Ward 6 Town and Regional Councillor position. Also, the power plant is not the only issue in town. Tom Adams Adams, who has represented Ward 6 since 2003, was part of the council that adopted the interim control bylaw, which he said bought time to stop the power plant planned for the Ford-owned lands of 1500 Royal Windsor Dr. He also said he played key roles in the cre- ation of new Official Plans at the Town and the Region to control growth and preserve the new natural heritage systems. Adams also lists helping lead council to defeat the residential tower project on Oakville Place Drive, preventing paid parking at the Trafalgar Medical Building and preserving the school lands on Coronation Drive as being among his other accomplishments. He is also an advocate for shifting the costs of growth to developers and off taxpayers through higher development charges. Adams said his record of defending northeast Oakville residents is evidence of how he will defend residents in the future. Northeast Oakville needs an experienced, energetic leader dedicated to responding to the concerns of northeast Oakville residents, said Adams. We need a leader who lives in northeast Oakville. Thats me. Adams said he aims to keep tax increases close to the level of inflation or better and points out the average property tax increase during this term of council was 2.67 per cent per year com- pared to the 3.61 per cent average annual increases from 2001 to 2006. Adams said during his most recent year as budget chair, the overall property tax increase was the lowest in 10 years at 1.5 per cent. For the coming council term Adams said he wants Oakville to focus its future capital projects on transportation and maintenance work such as the increases for repaving, which were adopt- ed this year to deal with the backlog of work built up by prior councils. Adams describes himself as a fiscal conserva- tive at heart. He is proud of the nine per cent reduction in taxpayer debt that occurred during the last four years. Adams said this strong financial position and the new non-tax revenue sources being created by the Town led Adams to support the $200 mil- lion commitment council made to the new Oakville hospital. Oakville needs a new hospital and we have a practical approach to fund it, said Adams. Adams worked eight years with Bank of Montreal Financial Group where he was a senior risk manager before becoming a full- time councillor. He is married with three children. Adams has lived in the ward since 1998. Eleventh in a series Tom Adams Doug MacKenzie MacKenzie and Adams compte for Ward 6 region seat See Former page 4
