Athletiques International member Sura Yekka beat out several older run- ners to earn a bronze medal at the National Age-Class Championships in Ottawa. Yekka, 13, used a strong surge in the final 150 metres to finish third in the under-16 girls 800-metre race. Yekka, the fifth-seeded runner in the event, crossed the line in a time of 2:17.50. Following the race, Yekka had the opportunity to meet Olympic bronze medallist Lynn Williams, whose daugh- ter Alison finished ahead of Yekka in the 800m race. Lynn Williams won bronze in the 3,000m at the Los Angeles Olympics in 1984. Yekka has only one outdoor competi- tion, a domestic meet this weekend at Etobicokes Centennial Stadium, remaining in whats been a successful season. She won gold in the 400m and 800m distances at the Minor Track Association Championships in Mississauga last month, then broke the provincial age- group record for the 300m with a time of 41.82 seconds. The largest swimming event ever held in Lake Ontario will take place this weekend along the shores of Oakville. The Lake Ontario Swim Team (LOST Swimming) will host its third annual race tomorrow (Saturday), beginning at the foot of Maple Grove Drive and ending at the Lighthouse Pier. The 3.8-kilometre course is the same distance swum in an Ironman Triathlon. Race director Rob Kent expects this years event will feature approximately 80 swimmers. Last years race drew 39, while the inaugural event in 2008 attracted eight participants. The field will be made up of competitive age group swimmers, masters swimmers, Ironman triathletes, varsity swimmers from the U.S. and Canada, marathon swimmers and others. Registration will run from 6:45 to 7:15 a.m. tomor- row, followed by a mandatory pre-race meeting at 7:45 a.m. The race begins at 8 a.m. LOST Swimming was started by Kent in 2006, when he was training to swim the English Channel. The group now routinely has 20 swimmers come out for a three- or four-kilometre swim every Saturday in Oakville.
