Police said at some point between July 15 and Aug. 1, while the minister was away, someone entered Trinity United Church, located at 1250 McCraney St. E., through a window. Once inside the suspect went through drawers and cupboards, but took nothing. A similar entry took place on July 31, at the Shaarei Beth-El Synagogue, located at 186 Morrison Rd. Police said the caretaker of the synagogue returned, after being away for a few hours, to find lights on, cupboard doors open in the kitchen and various other items mis- placed. Once again nothing was taken. Another incident took place at some point between Aug. 1, and Aug. 3 at Maple Grove United Church, located at 346 Maple Grove Dr. In that incident a caretaker entered the churchs office, after the Civic Holiday, to find some items had been moved and an undisclosed among of petty cash was gone. The final incident, which took place during the same time period, saw a window at the Church of the Nazarene, located at 320 Bronte Rd., forced open. Police do not believe the sus- pect actually entered after forc- ing the window and as such nothing was taken. Police theorize the suspect or suspects are entering the reli- gious houses in search of their collection money. Halton Police Public Affairs Officer Sgt. Brian Carr said these are crimes of opportunity and advised religious houses and residents in general to lock their doors and windows at night or when they are not present to prevent such thefts. Carr has also pointed out in the past that screen doors and windows offer little protection as they can be easily cut away or pushed in. Someone breaking into places of worship School bus orientation day on the books OAKVILLE BEAVER FILE PHOTOS BREAK-IN SCENES: Halton police are looking for whoever has broken into three local churches and a local synagogue. Among those broken into, from left, the Shaarei Beth-El Synagogue, the Church of the Nazarene and Trinity United Church. Also broken into was Maple Grove United Church. The Halton School Bus Safety Committee is inviting parents and first-time riders to a day where they will learn about the impor- tance of school bus safety. The School Bus Orientation Day takes place at six locations in Halton Region on Saturday, Aug. 28, including one stop in Oakville. The event also takes place in two locations in Burlington, one in Milton, one in Acton and one in Georgetown. The free presentation will fea- ture a classroom presentation on school bus safety, including a Winnie the Pooh video and demonstration. Children will learn about safely getting on and off a bus, proper behaviour, crossing the street to get to a waiting bus and more. The event starts at 9 a.m. at all locations.
