By Dominik Kurek OAKVILLE BEAVER STAFF An Oakville teenager, who wandered to the end of the eastern pier in Oakville Harbour to take photos of the tall Lake Ontario waves crash- ing to shore Monday afternoon, had to be res- cued when he was trapped by his photo subject. The 16-year-old was at the end of the pier for a few minutes when he realized the waves had become so large that returning along the pier was perilous and unwise. The young photographer found himself trapped at the end of the pier around 2 p.m. He held onto the lighthouse as waves crashed on top of him. The Halton Regional Police Service marine unit was called to the scene and a three-man team worked together to rescue the youngster. Constable Simon Langler donned a full-body dry suit with lifejacket and walked onto the pier to rescue the teenager. He was accompanied by Constables Shane Gemmill and Robert Garland, who stood on land. If Langler got pushed over by the waves and thrown into the water, the next officer would then be in place to rescue him. Its a team effort, Langler said. Theres no way any one man should go out in something like this. Thats how we operate. Fortunately, with proper training, Langler did not get pushed over. He walked over the pier and ducked under the waves as they crashed over the pier. He reached the teenager, who had been trapped on the pier for about 40 minutes, and was suffering from hypothermia. The youth was wet, getting doused by waves, wearing light clothing on a cold and windy day. The police officer hooked the youth onto himself and then they walked back towards land. When youre walking back you cant see the waves, Langler said. This is really very danger- ous. With the waves crashing down at their backs, it was the other two officers job to call to Langler and the teenager to brace themselves for each blow. After the rescue, Langler said that in a situa- tion such as this one, there is no escape route for the trapped individual. Police did not release the name of the teen.
