School from Pre-K to Grade 12 MacLachlan College offers students an A+ education How do you identify a world- class school? As one of only three private schools in Oakville accredited by SEA+L, Standards in Excellence and Learning, MacLachlan College has established itself as one of the finest schools in Canada. In addition, as a candidate school for the International Baccalaureate Primary Years Programme, MacLachlan is the only private school in Oakville offering the IB-PYP, an internation- ally recognized curriculum designed for students from pre- school to grade 6. The IB is one of the worlds most rigorous and highly esteemed educa- tion programmes. The IB guarantees that students receive a world class education - one that is Challenging, Engaging, Relevant and Significant. How does an IB class at MacLachlan differ from a class at another private school? Here is a look into Mrs. Wilhelm and Mrs. ReynoldsMs. Woodward grade 5 classes at MacLachlan. This term the grades 5s are doing a Program of Inquiry with the theme of How the World Works. The 1st central idea they are studying is understanding how humans use the laws of science to design and construct structures. The teachers take this central idea and make it authentic and exciting for their students. At MacLachlan textbooks arent just for reading! Students are given a bucket of mixed supplies and are instructed to build a bridge with no further teacher guidance. Groups of students are engaged to engineer a structure that will hold more textbooks than their peers. When the final testing is complete, students reflect on their successes and areas requiring redesign. Students apply their new under- standing of the laws of physics to their next lesson, egg-speri- ments. As students pile pumpkins, garbage cans, textbooks and stools on top of their four-egg buildings, they quickly realize the inherent strength in a seemingly fragile object. Mrs. Wilhelm and Mrs. Reynolds students are completely engaged in the world of structures and forces and they are eagerly anticipating their community structure analysis that will continue to reveal the won- ders of the world they live in. So what makes the IB a cut above any other educational pro- grammes? The IB PYP programme is embedded in all subject areas and MacLachlans IB trained teachers guide students to learn by inquiry so that higher order thinking skills are tapped. Learning at MacLachlan gives students more connection to the real world so that they become critical thinkers who are interna- tionally minded.
