Oakvillegreen Conservation Association would like to note that it was our founders who introduced the idea of creating a Natural Heritage System (NHS) in the 7,600 acres of land north of Hwy. 5 that the Town wanted to develop. Oakvillegreen, and the hundreds of citizens who turned out at Town Hall meetings to support good planning and the protection of our natural spaces, faced stiff resistance to the idea from the Council of the day which was headed by Ann Mulvale. The Town argued the land for the NHS would have to be purchased and the Town couldnt afford it. We argued the land didnt have to be purchased it could be zoned at no cost to the taxpayer. It was Oakvillegreen, with the support of our members and friends, who lob- bied hard, over many years, for the creation of the NHS. Ultimately, an OMB ruling supported our Natural Heritage System and, through zon- ing, about 25% of the land north of Hwy. 5 was preserved. The Environmental Strategic Plan and the creation of an environmen- tal fund resulted from a settlement agreement following Oakvillegreen Conservation Association and Clear the Air Coalition, headed at the time by Rob Burton, taking the Town of Oakville to the Ontario Munici- pal Board. Oakvillegreen had also been asking for a thorough, scientific survey of the land north of Hwy. 5 and that, too, was approved in the settlement agreement, laying the groundwork for the mapping and preservation of the Natural Heritage System. Oakvillegreen Conservation Association is proud of its record of achieve- ment as a grassroots environmental advocacy group. Our unbroken re- cord of success would not have been possible without the widespread support of people in the community. Thank you. We will continue to work hard on your behalf.
