The Progressive C o n s e r v a t i v e s slammed the McGuinty govern- ment, in a press release last week, stating McGuinty Liberal MPPs are failing in their duties as commu- nity representatives and forcing many municipalities to use hard earned tax dollars to hire lob- byists in order to get action from the provincial government. The release specifically targeted Oakville to make its point stating that in spite of being represented by Liberal MPP Kevin Flynn, Oakville has had to pay for the services of 10 lobbyists, more than any other municipality, since Dalton McGuinty became pre- mier. A review of the Provinces Lobbyist Registry found 10 individual lobbyists have been hired during this term of council while three others were hired during the previous term. The Lobbyist Registration Act, which established the lobbyist registry, was only passed in 1998. By Dominik Kurek OAKVILLE BEAVER STAFF To kick off Small Business Week, the co-star of CBCs Dragons Den, Arlene Dickinson told the Oakville business community to quit think- ing about the future and to think about the now. Dickinson, also the CEO of Venture Communications, spoke to some 450 guests at an Oakville Chamber of Commerce Small Business Week kick-off breakfast event on Monday. She told the guests about her dif- ficult journey through life, from working without a pay cheque and feeding her children to helping build what is now one of Canadas largest independent marketing firms. She also provided advice to entrepre- neurs. It was during her familys difficult journey from South Africa to Canada when her father taught her to think about the journey now, instead of looking ahead to where she wished to be. She was born in a small town in South Africa. When she was very young, her father decided to uproot the family and head for Canada, to give his three daughters a better start in life.
