There, he saw students, 65 in the lone classroom, study- ing in school with tin walls, sitting on boxes that they used to carry their books. Van Koeverden said the trips purpose was to inspire athlete ambassadors to continue to promote the organ- ization and its projects. And it certainly worked. It was an enlightening experience, he said. Just to see the optimism and hope they hold on to despite their living situation and the challenges they face. Mathews now hopes van Koeverdens presentation will inspire his students. Theyre more inquisitive and hopefully the result will be more critical thinking, Mathews said. Trip to Liberia was enlightening Continued from page 40 GRAHAM PAINE / OAKVILLE BEAVER Pine Grove wins three cross-country pennants Pine Grove School won three division pennants at the Halton District School Boards elemen- tary cross-country Division C meet last week at Burlingtons Sherwood Forest Park. Pine Grove took top honours in both the tyke girls and boys A races as well as the atom girls division. Other local schools to win pen- nants were Sunningdale and West Oak. Sunningdale finished first in tyke girls B, and West Oak was tops in senior girls. The meet featured the five sen- ior schools in Halton plus the 14 largest K-8 schools (by population size) in the board. A total of 1,846 runners crossed the finish line at the meet. Forest Trail, Joshua Creek, Posts Corners and W.H. Morden also participated at the Division C competition.
