Approximately 40 auto parts workers assembled outside Automodulars 2335 Speers Rd. location to participate in a short rally telling auto parts industry employers, Enough is enough. Were not interested in negotiating back- ward. We in the union have done our share with this latest crisis. The autoworker is not responsible for the downturn in this sector. The auto parts industry has been hard hit for years with unfair trade agreements, a high Canadian dollar and finally the latest global economic crisis, said Angus MacDonald, CAW Local 1256 president, who addressed the gathering from atop a picnic table via megaphone. The recovery has begun and the profits are returningWe have shared your pain and now we want to share your gains. MacDonald went on to list the profits made by the various auto companies during the first six months of the year, listing Ford, General Motors and Toyota profits that go into the billions. He also said auto production in Canada is up 65 per cent so far this year. With these gains, MacDonald said the efforts of auto industry employers to do things like reduce worker benefits are com- pletely unwarranted. Threats to workers that, We will move or close if you do not give us A, B and C, are outrageous. We will not give into these demands. We have some of the best produc- tive, educated workforces here in this province, said MacDonald. We will not and cannot entertain wage comparisons with China and Mexico. With his speech complete many present cheered MacDonald while others waved CAW flags. When reached for comment, Automodulars Vice President of Finance Chris Nutt pointed out the demonstration was not specifically targeting Automodular or any specific issues the CAW has with the company. This is a sort of show of force by CAW across the province, said Nutt. The reality is we think we have a good working relationship with the CAW, we have a contract with them that continues on until the middle of the year next year and really thats all there is to say. The CAW Day of Action was expected to see rallies take place at more than 100 work- places across Ontario in what they have described as the first large-scale effort orchestrated by Canadas auto parts work- ers. As many as 15,000 auto parts worker were expected to take part in the demonstration. The Day of Action also included a mas- sive outreach effort to non-unionized auto parts workers, including those employed by Magna.
