After last year's H1N1 flu scare, and the pending onset of a new flu season it is important for parents to review flu prevention with their lit- tle ghouls, according to release from the local St. John Ambulance. Here are some tips: Wash your paws, claws, hooks and hands hand washing is one of the most basic and most effective ways to prevent getting sick. Pack your little monsters off with some hand sanitizers or wipes and make sure they know to wash their hands before snacking. Catch it in your sleeve remind kids to cough or sneeze into their sleeves or a tissue. Avoid common surfaces instead of knocking on the door or ringing the doorbell, encourage kids to shout trick or treat! at the hous- es they visit. Dont grab for goodies: When handing out candy, avoid letting kids dig in the bowl instead use clean hands or a scoop to distribute goodies. Keep it to yourself: If you or someone in your household is sick, dont hand out treats. Kids want candy, not germs. Plan Ahead: No parent wants to keep their child from having Halloween fun; but if theyre sick, they should stay home. Plan ahead for Halloween at Home rent a scary movie the kids may want to watch, play games, have a Halloween candy hunt or let the kids trick or treat to different rooms in the house. Wash paws, claws, hooks and hands this Halloween Oakville residents Laura Andrews and Marie Borges, who several years ago participated in a fashion show to bring breast cancer awareness to women under 50, are back at work. This time, theyre involved in a fundraising calendar for the Kelly Shires Foundation, a not-for-profit group that funds women and men battling this dis- ease for things such as parking costs during their treatment, daycare costs that may be impossible if they are not able to work during their treatments and do not have employee benefits. The calendar features all young women who are breast cancer survivors in body paint. Everyone involved, from photogra- pher David Hou to the printer, body painting artists, hair stylists, makeup artists and the trucking company that shipped the 5,000 calendars, is volun- teering. Proceeds from the calendar sales go directly to the women battling breast cancer. In Oakville, the calendars are being sold at Uptown Studios on Sixth Line and Shoppers Drug Mart on Neyagawa Boulevard, as well as at The Medical Image on Argus Road.
