Birding expert Bridget Stutchbury, author of The Bird Detective: Investigating the Secret Lives of Birds, will be speaking in Oakville Thursday, Sept. 16 about the peculiar ways of birds. Stutchbury is a professor of biology at York University and is an internationally-recognized birding expert. She works to preserve bird habitats and is affiliated with more than a dozen organizations includ- ing Wildlife Preservation Canada and the World Wildlife Fund. In her latest book she reveals some of the reasons behind the strange behaviour of birds, their colour, songs and habits. The event is hosted by the Canadian Club of Halton Peel and takes place at the Oakville Conference Centre, located at 2515 Wyecroft Rd. Registration and cash bar open at 6 p.m. and dinner starts at 7 p.m. Tickets are $30 for the clubs members, $40 for non-members and $15 for students. Bird expert to speak at Canadian Club A doctor of oncology will speak to Oakville residents about some of the research into cancers to mark the 30th anniversary of the Terry Fox Run. Dr. John Goffin will speak in Hamptons Restaurant on Sept. 9. Goffin works in the department of oncology at McMaster Universitys Juravinksi Cancer Centre and he will speak about the research at the centre that is fund- ed by the Terry Fox Foundation. The event will feature a break- fast at the restaurant and begins at 7:30 a.m. Breakfast cost is $12 and there is an $8 minimum donation to the Terry Fox Foundation.
