Both Ockenden and Halton Hills Wards 3 & 4 trustee Gillian Tuck Kutarna have filed to run in the upcoming October elections for the Halton Hills ward. This is Ockendens first term as trustee. He was elected in 2006. Im kind of shocked, he said of getting the new role. I came into this meeting not having any idea this was going to happen whatsoever. Im flattered that my colleagues have the confidence in me to work together with our new director in this transition period. Despite having to make the transition with a new director, Ockenden said there should be no challenges in that regard. Im looking forward to work- ing with him and well see what happens, he said. The surprise of Jones stepping down was definitely around the table. Burlington Ward 4 trustee Peggy Russell, who is also running for a city council position in the next month, said she had spoken to Jones prior to the meeting. During their conversation Jones asked her to reconsider running as a trustee again because the board needs intelligent people dedicated to the children. In that time, Russell told the Beaver, there was no indication from Jones that he would run for council. Jones is running in the Oakville Ward 5 regional council contest against incumbent Jeff Knoll. Russell is running in Ward 5 Burlington. In his outgoing speech, Joudrie said that the new director would have no problem picking up where Joudrie left off and making the board even better. Its been an absolute delight to have served the Halton communi- ty, the staff, the students and the community at large, he said. I think Ive taken the job seriously but I dont take myself seriously. I like to have fun along the way and we had fun around the table and weve had fun around other tables and thats part of what we do. New chair faces challenges Continued from page 17
