On Monday night, town council will consider a fare increase of about 10 per cent for a 10-km trip. The increase would help drivers cover the newly-imposed HST on rides, along with rising costs for gas, licensing and insurance since the last fare increase in March 2008. Under the plan being recommended by the Towns Administrative Services committee, the drop rate (the fee the meter begins at when you hire a cab) would rise from $3 to $4.25. As well, the distance charge would rise from 25 cents per 145 metres to 25 cents per 140 metres. The waiting time fee, which is in effect when- ever the taxi is stopped, would rise from $25 per hour to $30 per hour. What youre looking at is a catch-up rate that would bring Oakvilles taxicab rates in line with other fares in the GTA, said Phil Bouillon, the towns assistant clerk. Staff is also recommending the approval of a plan that would increase taxicab fares annually based on a formula related to the Consumer Price Index. HST blamed for pending taxi fare hike
