On Tuesday, Sept. 7, OneMatch will be holding a second In Honour of David Smyth clinic, this time sponsored by Oakville MPP, Kevin Flynn and the Halton Health Services at Oakville Trafalgar Memorial Hospital. The July 28 clinic at Holy Trinity Church saw people from as far as Peterborough and Aurora attend to try and save the life of David and 788 other Canadians currently awaiting a bone marrow transplant. Once again there will be people travelling a far distance to donate. One of them is Mike Berto, who will be driving from London, Ontario to register. The timing almost didnt work out, however, as he was scheduled to take a trip to the United States. on Sept. 1- 8. Because of that, he had spoken to Mary-Lynn Pride, of Canadian Blood Services, who had arranged for him to register online instead and have a buccal swab kit mailed to him. They were saying that this would save the trip, but realistically speaking, even if they did send that kit out the same day, the kits not going to come to my house with the long weekend before Tuesday (Sept. 7), said Berto, a supervisor at Davwire, a defense and avia- tion wiring company in London. But because of his desire to do whatever he could to help David, Berto reconsidered and cut his trip by one day to attend the Sept. 7 clinic. If theres a chance, Id like to help. If we were ever in that same boat, I would hope somebody would take the (drive). Berto found out about David through a family members newsletter that was sent out asking people if they matched the criteria for a possible match for David. Berto has all three: He has a Irish and Ukrainian back- ground, 43 years old and in good health. Chances for a match for David are a bit high- er because they both have the same ethnic background. My mom is Irish and my biological father is Ukrainian and I fall within the age group, said Berto. The story got (to) me. My wife and I just had our first (son), hes a year (old) now. If we were in that situation, I would hope somebody would do the same thing. After the July 28 clinic, Davids father, Mike, contacted Flynn to see if the province could help set up walk-in clinics in hospitals, where people could go in and donate at any- time. A vast majority of people wanting to help David are going into hospitals and they are getting turned away, said Smyth. There is a lot of traffic and people coming in, whether its staff, the public or its a patient. Everyone can say, Yeah this is a logical place to take the time to want to do this. Nearly 800 people across the country, including one of our own, Oakville resident David Smyth, are in need of a stem cell trans- plant. It's clear that we need more people reg- istered with the OneMatch Stem Cell and Marrow Network, said Flynn. I appreciate OTMH's quick offer to partner with me and provide a site for a local clinic. The Sept. 7 clinic is at Oakville Trafalgar Memorial Hospital located on 327 Reynolds Street. The clinic hours are from 1-7 p.m. Donors should be between the ages of 17 and 51 years. If you are unable to attend these clin- ics but wish to help, you can register online at www.onematch.ca and have a swab kit mailed out to you.
