Jim Smith, who served as Oakvilles Ward 6 councillor from 1991 to 1997, announced Wednesday that he will be stepping back into the political area, challenging incumbent Max Khan for the Ward 6 councillor seat. Smith said he has a strong desire to preserve the towns character. In his press release Smith weighed in on a number of the issues facing Oakville. On the issue of the new Oakville hospital Smith stated the Towns share of the cost will probably come to $400 million rather than the estimated $200 million. Smith acknowledges that Oakville needs a new hospital, but said the Town also needs to find other ways to pay for it. He also weighed in on the 900-megawatt power plant, proposed for the Ford-owned lands of 1500 Royal Windsor Dr., stating this issue had been so poorly handled the power plant will probably be built. That said, Smith still intends to lobby to stop it. In something of a paradox Smith also said he is running to eliminate several Town coun- cillor positions stating that if elected he would introduce a motion to reduce the number of Oakville councillors by 50 per cent from 12 to six. The Town can run efficiently with six coun- cillors representing us at the Town and Regional levels, he said. The present council is not working effective- ly. Smith also said the Town needs to negotiate more effectively with the province and developers on infrastructure costs. When he was previously on council, Smith said, they were able to complete the Upper Middle Road bridge one year early and $1 mil- lion under budget because of negotiation. Smith also took a shot at the incumbent Max Khan stating that Khan has already accept- ed the nomination as Oakvilles Liberal candi- date in the next federal election and as such if elected he would not complete his term and a bi-election would need to be called costing tax- payers more money. I have the skills and the experience to make these massive changes for the better, said Smith. I can represent your interests and con- cerns while working to save tax dollars and keep Oakville a unique, safe place where we are all proud to live.
