Airport & Out-of-Town Service www.oakvilleunitedtaxi.com 5 Friday , Septem ber 3, 2010 O A KVILLE BEA V ER w w w .o akvillebeaver .co m Hes represented residents as the president of the Trafalgar Chartwell Ratepayers Association (TCRA) and now Nick Hutchins will seek to repre- sent them as the councilor for Ward 3. Hutchins announced earlier this year that he will take on incumbent Mary Chapin for the Ward 3 council- lors seat, which he believes he can bring something to because of his unique background. Born in Kenya, Hutchins has worked and lived in many countries, arriving in Canada in 1974 and mov- ing to Oakville in 1984. Hutchins said his experience prior to moving to Canada helps him bring a wider perspective to local issues. His employment history has been varied with Hutchins initially work- ing in a management position within the pharmaceutical industry, but then decided to put his creative tal- ents to work by becoming an inventor and entrepreneur. Hutchins said he has an issued joint patent and has patents pending. He is also the part owner and part- ner in HIL-Tech Ltd., a company that designs and manufactures LED light- ing systems for use in roadways and airfields. Hutchins said he has always had a strong interest in commu- nity issues and has been an active member and volun- teer director of the TCRA for the last 10 years. He has also been the president of the organiza- tion for the last three years. Hutchins said under his leadership the TCRA has been at the forefront of preserving the charm and integrity of the neigh- bourhood; collaborating with Town officials and other Ward 3 associa- tions to oppose the 900-megawatt gas-fired power plant, proposed for the 1500 Royal Windsor Dr., and other developments the group con- siders inappropriate; and working with Town councillors and commit- tees to maintain and improve the community. Some of the committees Hutchins has been involved with include the Parks and Recreation Committee, the Oakville 150 Anniversary Committee, the Midtown Area Development Committee, the Downtown Oakville Strategic Review Committee, the Official Plan Committee, the Citizens for Clean Air (C4CA) Anti-Power Plant Committee and the Sithe Ratepayer Oversight Committee. In addition to advocat- ing against the proposed power plant, Hutchins is also calling for an all sea- son park to be created on the soon to be vacated hos- pital lands on Reynolds Street. Being close to down- town, shopping and restau- rants, such a park would encourage visits from all over Oakville from both residents and visi- tors, said Hutchins. In addition, the old Oakville Trafalgar High School, a heritage building dear to many with fond memories, could then become a vital part of such a park as a cafnd restaurant, a summer and winter skate rental facility, an art gallery, a community classroom, exercise place etc. Hutchins plans to lobby for a recreation, athletics, swimming and arts community centre for Ward 3, to ensure that any surplus school lands remain public spaces and to fight to ensure that developers pay for devel- opment and not the taxpayer.
