Vince Williams took the Safe Start safety blitz to Our Lady of Peace School Wednesday morning. As area children take to the streets to return to school so, too, do Halton Regional Police in an effort to ensure those children reach their destina- tions safely. The Halton Regional Police Service announced the beginning of project Safe Start marking the beginning of a period of enhanced road rules enforcement, which will last until Sept. 17.The project was first initiated in 2006 and is being undertaken again this year to remind the motorists of the need to be courteous to other drivers and children, particularly at this time of year when they make their way back to school. Halton police point out that every available officer in Halton will be engaged in this initiative, which will focus on enforcement in the areas of speeding, seatbelts, stop signs, school zones and school buses. Police say they will also be enforcing the Distracted Driver Legislation, meaning motorists had best put down their cell phones and Blackberrys while driving.
