The event, which was held from Sept. 2- 5 at Bramptons South Fletchers Sportsplex, drew approximately 300 fire- fighters from across the country, including 11 Oakville firefighters, with participants required to rapidly complete an intense obstacle course to secure victory. Oakvilles Levitt-Safety Team #1, consist- ing of Shaun Henderson, Darren Van Zandbergen, Dave Walker, Kurtis Mantell and Mark Tyler, captured the bronze medal standing in the relay portion of the compe- tition. The two-man team of Henderson and Van Zandbergen also made their presence felt, taking third place in the NXG2 Tandem event. We had more team members out than anyone else in Canada, said Henderson. Overall, Oakville had an outstanding performance. It has been a great year for us. Everywhere weve gone, weve shown really well and the new guys on our team have just progressively gotten better. The obstacle course competitors are striving to complete in the least amount of time is more accurately described as a gru- eling endurance challenge. Clad in full firefighter gear and carrying a 50-pound, packed-up hose, the participant must first race up a five-storey tower. Once at the top of the tower, the partici- pant drops the hose being carried and then hoists up a second hose from the ground below.
