More and more, she said, there is a growing lack of confidence among resi- dents about the Towns financial position, listing the $200 million local share funding commitment the Town has made to the new Oakville hospital as an example of where confidence is falling short. Where is the mayor and members of councils plan to fund the promise they have made, asked Mulvale. From what I can see and what others have been reading, they have no plan to fund the Oakville community share that the Province requires without raising your taxes. Burton disputed this, stating the pay- ments do not begin for five years and he has a plan to generate money for the local share not from taxes, but from new municipal business activities in such things as green energy and other areas. He also said that while the local share payment is capped at $130 million in 2015, it may turn out to be less because of a deal that was reached, which says if the request for proposal bids come in lower than the provisional figures, those savings will go towards the local share. Mulvale also attacked the Towns grow- ing debt stating that it has risen from $29 million to $89 million in just one year. She said this is a 207 per cent increase that is not going to be swept away with the revenues from future development charges the way the Town says it will. I ask you, given the current projected financial climate, is that realistic? asked Mulvale. Will we not be saddled with this debt for a much longer period of time than the incumbent tells us? Burton said Mulvale is not recognizing the fact that there are two different types of debt debt that must be shouldered by the taxpayer and debt that must be shouldered by development charges. Debt supported by taxpayers, weve reduced from the level she left it at, said Burton. If she is against development charge- supported debt, she is against making developers pay their way. Mulvale said not taking both develop- ment-charge supported debt and taxpayer- supported debt into consideration is like dealing with your household expenses while forgetting about your mortgage. The meeting will take place at Glen Abbey United Church, located at 1469 Nottinghill Gate. The four candidates, Rob Burton, Ann Mulvale, Raymond Ray and John McLaughlin, will answer the publics questions. They will talk about current issues facing the town, such as hospital funding, the air quality bylaw, taxa- tion, economic development and tourism. We are pleased to host this meeting and give the candidates the opportunity to publicly discuss their positions on key topics, said Mark Brown, chair of the board for the chamber.
