Thanks to Make-A-Wish Canada, 10-year-old Daniel Snell was able to make his dream come true last year. Now. the St. Joan of Arc student wants to return the favour to help other children make their wishes come true. On Saturday, Daniel and his mother, Tara, will be holding a garage sale and lemonade stand at their house to help raise money for the foundation. Make-A-Wish Canada grants wishes to children who are living with life- threatening medical conditions. The whole wish, from start to finish, truly was an amazing and humbling experience that we will all remember for the rest of our lives, said Tara. Because of this we feel the need to give back and so the kids can understand it is just as meaningful to give as it is to receive. Daniel has had diabetes since he was three. He also has asthma and celiac disease. Celiac disease is a medical condition in which the surface of the small intestine is damaged by gluten. This causes an allergic reac- tion and results in an inability of the body to absorb nutrients: pro- tein, fat, carbohydrates, vitamins and minerals, which are neces- sary for good health. Tara says that Daniel is doing okay, but he does struggle at times on a daily basis. He is on a insulin pump. Hes okay, but its hard. Not just that, but its everything else that goes with it, the high sugars, the low sugars (and) school stuff. Everyday is tough, but he is okay. The foundation is sending stencils, balloons, and posters for Daniel to put up around the neighbourhood and brochures for the garage sale. We have asked friends and family to donate stuff to the sale as well. It will hopefully be a very large garage sale, said Tara. Robyn Goodman from the Make A Wish Foundation says that in 2009, the foundation helped 457 children make their dreams come true. Disneyworld is their number one wish, but they also receive a lot of celebrity requests from kids. A wish child actually this evening (Sept. 2) (is) going to see the Jonas Brothers concert and meeting them backstage for a meet and greet. Its amazing (since) hes (Daniel) a kid and giving back to an organization that means something to him, said Goodman. A lot of our money is raised through people like Daniel who do third-party events for us and raise money that comes direct- ly to granting childrens wish- es. The garage sale and lemonade stand is at 2208 Ashmore Dr. from 8 a.m.- 2 p.m. Each lemonade will be sold with a cookie for $1. All proceeds will go towards Make-A-Wish Canada. A rain date would take place the following day. The more we can get the word out there, the better. The Make-A-Wish foundation is truly amazing, said Snell. Grateful recipient wants to help make wishes come true ERIC RIEHL / SPECIAL TO THE BEAVER PAYING IT FORWARD: Daniel Snell was granted a wish from the Make a Wish Foundation last year. Now, he is holding a garage sale and lemonade stand on Saturday to raise money for the foundation.
