Starting Saturday September 11/10 w w w . o a kv ill eb ea ve r.c o m O A KV IL LE B EA V ER Th ur sd ay , Se pt em be r 1 6, 2 01 0 4 Town council voted Monday to block plans to demolish the home of the former president of AVRO Aircraft Limited. The property, located at 394 Lakeshore Rd., W., and currently owned by 394 Lakeshore Oakville Holdings Inc., is home to the Lambert-Smye Estate House and grounds. In a staff report to council, it was stated the property is one of the few remaining intact early 20th Century estates along Oakvilles waterfront. The property is also considered special as it was the home of Fred T. Smye, who was the president of AVRO Aircraft Limited during the height of the programs, which saw the development of the AVRO Arrow as well as the AVRO CF 100 fighter and North Americas first jet passenger plane, the AVRO Jetliner. The AVRO Arrow was an advanced, super- sonic, twin engine interceptor jet developed by AVRO Aircraft Limited from 1949 until the governments controversial canceling of the project in 1959. Had the project continued many believe the plane would have been the fastest and most advanced interceptor in the world, at that time. The property was placed on the Oakville Register of Properties of Cultural Heritage Value or Interest in July of 2009, meaning it could not be demolished without the approval of council. On July 15, 2010 council received an application from the owner to demolish the property, giving council 90 days to either pro- tect the property through designation under the Ontario Heritage Act or to allow the dem- olition to take place. In the end council decided to endorse Town staffs recommendation to refuse the demolition request due to the propertys important heritage aspects. On June 21, 2010 council also resolved to issue a notice of intention to designate the general property and estate house. Town grounds plans to demolish home of former AVRO president The Town of Oakville is holding an open house Sept. 21 to introduce new planning requirements for assessing proposals for power generation facilities. The proposed amendments are now available on the Towns website and the final study report should be posted online today. The open house is from 79 p.m. at Town Hall with a brief presentation from staff at 7:30 p.m. Following the presentation, Town staff will be available to speak with individuals regarding the proposed amendments and the final study report.
