Both the Halton public and Catholic district school boards showed their students exceeded the provincial averages in Grade 3 and 6 read- ing, writing and math and in Grade 9 math. The tests examined whether students could achieve the provincial standard in the different fields. In Grade 3 reading the provincial standards are for reading 62 per cent, writing 70 per cent and math 71 per cent. The public school board scored 69, 74 and 77 respectively while the Catholic school board students scored 74, 82 and 83 in each category. For Grade 6 students the provincial averages for children who meet the standards are for reading 72 per cent, writing 70 per cent and math 61 per cent. The public school board students scored 78, 74 and 66 in each while the Catholic students achieved 82, 80 and 76. Grade 9 mathematics results were divided by students taking the applied and the academic math programs. The provincial average to achieve the provincial standard in the test is 40 per cent for applied students while in the aca- demic program the average is 82 per cent. Of the public school board 52 per cent of the applied students achieved the required grade while 89 per cent did in the academic program. In the Catholic school board the results are 86 per cent for the academic and 48 per cent for the applied students. Halton students excel in math, reading and writing Children whose favourite teddy bear or doll have an injury that needs fixing can attend a free event where St. John Ambulance personnel can do the mending. The Teddy Bear Triage takes place at the Oakville Fire Departments Fire Prevention Week kick-off event on Saturday, Sept. 25 at its Fire Training Campus. The event runs from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. St. Johns trained medical staff and first response volunteers will be on hand to fix the toys bruises, scrapes and cuts.
