However, the awkwardness and/or fear of dis- cussing suicide pales in comparison to the damage caused if the complex issue is not brought to the forefront. For example, did you know: 30 suicide deaths occur each year on average in Halton In Halton there are more than 420 hospitaliza- tions each year from attempted suicides Halton Regional Police receives, on average, one call per day related to suicide Those are frightening statistics to be sure, howev- er by bringing the issue of suicide into the light, steps can be taken to help reduce those numbers. Last Friday was World Suicide Prevention Day and Halton Region, along with the Halton Suicide Prevention Coalition (HSPC), wants to raise aware- ness about the Coalitions updated website that offers easy-to-access information and support for anyone either considering suicide or wanting to help a sui- cidal person. The website is www.suicideprevention- halton.ca. Taking the lead from the Coalition, we can build a greater understanding in Halton about the warn- ing signs of suicide and the support available to help prevent it, said Regional Chair Gary Carr. Its a complex issue and I encourage residents to visit the updated HSPC website or call the Region for more information. The Halton Suicide Prevention Coalition is a coalition of the Halton Region Health Department, local health and social services organizations, and individuals interested in suicide prevention. In Halton Hills, a suicide prevention group- H.E.A.L. is also available to help. The group was formed three years ago to develop suicide preven- tion, intervention and advocacy strategies by increasing awareness and fostering links between those who need support and those who can offer help. By working together and openly discussing the issue of suicide, it is hoped that, in time, the number of suicides and attempted suicides in Halton Region will significantly decline. To ignore the issue certainly is not the answer. I have to say I was quite amused when I read the letter written by Roberto Walcott. We must remember that Oakville MPP Kevin Flynn was par- liamentary assistant to the Minister of Energy and was instrumental in creating the grievously misnamed Green Energy Act. This act removed all the cards from municipalities across the province and gave the provincial government complete authority over power projects. Flynn cannot distance himself from this. It is in the Parliamentary Hansard. In February 2009, Dalton McGuinty said: Municipalities will no longer be able to reject wind turbines, solar panels, or bio-fuel plants because they dont like them. We cant allow interests to oppose these simply because they dont like them. McGuinty's quote omitted the words gas-fired power plants but the legislation included them. Hansard records show that Flynn was warned about the act and the consequences that could come about but his response was don't be silly. Those consequences have hap- pened and the residents of south east Oakville are now fighting the proposed plant but have few tools available to them. Regardless of the opinion of Walcott, Flynn did not have the foresight needed to under- stand the ramifications of his own legislation to the detriment of all Oakville residents. If Flynn is truly sincere that he represents his constituents, he should leave the Liberal caucus and sit as an Independent, Flynn will THE OAKVILLE BEAVER IS PROUD OFFICIAL MEDIA SPONSOR FOR: ATHENAAward THE OAKVILLE BEAVER IS PROUD OFFICIALMEDIASPONSOR FOR: Recognized for Excellence by Canadian CirculationAudit Board Member Canadian CommunityNewspapers AssociationOntario CommunityNewspapers Association Suburban Newspapers of America It is with great interest that I read the article Sprott Foundation Donates $500,000 for Pakistan Relief in The Oakville Beaver Sept. 1 edition.
