Wedeles retired from teaching in 1986, but she turned her talents to volunteering becoming president of the Ontario Retired Teachers' Federation, a volunteer and later board member of the Oakville Distress Centre, the Halton Elderly Services Advisory Committee, the Victorian Order of Nurses Friendly Visitor Program and a sen- iors residence board member. Wedeles won the Halton Woman of the Year award in 2006 and was recognized in 2008 by the Province of Ontario for her vol- unteerism. Wedeles always put her long summer breaks to good use, travelling by car with her family across the continent. She later logged trips further afield at age 75 she went to Israel and Egypt, and then in the following years to Russia and to Australia and New Zealand. My mom loved Canada, she was so glad to live here and she especially loved the West and North, the Rockies and the Yukon, said Judy who made one of the last major trips of her moms life with her in the early 2000s. She was so wonderful its hard to say. My mom was greatly respected and greatly loved, said Judy. Wedeles was predeceased by her husband Herbert, sisters Inge and Ellen; her brother Wolfgang; and her parents Alexander Feitelberg and Ilsa von Ruckteshell. She leaves behind her children, Peter, Chris, and Judy; daughters-in-law Kathie and Elizabeth; and grandchildren Jennifer, Christopher, Jeremy, and Sally. Visitation is at the Kopriva Taylor Community Funeral Home, 64 Lakeshore Rd. W. (905-844-2600), today (Wednesday, Sept. 22) from 3-5 p.m. and 7-9 p.m. A funeral service will be held at St. John's United Church, 262 Randall St., tomorrow (Thursday, Sept. 23) at 1 p.m. Interment will follow at St. Jude's Cemetery.
