Be careful because youre going to spend a lot of time paying back that loan, he said. Also, unlike instructors at school, because shows are so tech- nical, directors in the working world will allow their actors to work through their lines in their own way. However, both he and Kennedy said there are exceptions to that. Therriault explained in the pro- duction of The Producers, the lighting was already set up to fol- low a particular sequence. It was the actors jobs to learn their roles within those lighting sequences. However, he added, once the posi- tions were memorized, an actor was free to act as he would, with little direction. Another thing awaiting would- be actors is the seemingly long time it takes to get roles. When Therriault graduated in 95, he was working in cafees and bars until he got into Stratford in 97. I was thinking this is not going to happen, he said. It felt like a long time. But, two years, it really wasnt. People were also given the opportunity to ask questions. One person asked about dealing with reviews, good or bad, but mainly the bad ones. I try not to read them because its easier that way, Kennedy said. If you believe the good ones you have to believe the bad ones. Your responsibility is to the show and I think often if the show is panned it can poison the people in the show and then you start feeling ashamed of your work and it creates a bad feeling for the company. Why not just go in and try to do your best work possible. Therriault, concurred. Its easier to avoid (reviews), he said. Because if (the play) has been criticized you cant do anything about it because you have to follow the directors direction. Constructive criticism is useful but as an actor, when youre still doing a run, you cant use that criticism until its closed. Then you can use that criti- cism for the next production. Cushman was also asked about writing bad reviews. He said in North America, things are different from his native Britain where he started. In the United Kingdom reviewers do not attack any one person if they do not have to. However, on this side of the Atlantic, reviewers are expected to name everyone in the production. He said he personally prefers the British way, but added that criticiz- ing an actor can help their matura- tion for the next time. Despite so many things stand- ing in the way of actors, and it being so difficult to even get a start, not everything is against would-be actors. Therriault said, that in todays age, unlike in previous times, actors are lucky because there are numerous people willing to give actors opportunities. For example, he said after poor reviews came out of one of his per- formances, early in his career, he believed he would not be able to find work again. However, immedi- ately after someone offered him a role in The Tempest. It takes time. Just because you didnt succeed in this you have to keep trying, he said. If at first you dont succeed, try, try again Continued from page 21 Ford in Oakville runs at museum Halton Regional Museum is celebrating an important moment in Haltons history, the literal rise of the Ford motor company in Oakville. The show, titled Ford Oakville Rising, will feature photographs that depict the construction of Fords Oakville assembly plant, located at Royal Windsor Dr. and the QEW. The special reception and presentation will take place on Friday, Sept. 24 from 4 to 7 p.m. The exhibit features 23 black- and-white photographs retrieved from Fords archives. Photos include everything from the ground breaking on Jan. 4, 1952 to the plants com- pletion one year later. Staff at the Ford plant discov- ered a box of rare original photos while working on another event with the museum, said Nancy Field, manager of heritage servic- es, in a press release. We jumped at the chance to share the find and asked for per- mission to replicate the photos, which Ford granted. This is a perfect fit with our vision as a leader in heritage stewardship, connecting Haltons communi- ties and people by relating Haltons past to its present and future. The HaltonArt Gallery is a perfect venue to showcase these important images. The exhibit will be housed in the HaltonArt Gallery of the museums visitor centre. The museum is located in the Kelso Conservation Area in Milton. For more information, visit www.halton.ca/museum.
