Among these measures is the interim control bylaw, which was upheld by the OMB during a recent hearing. The $200-million commitment the Town has made to building the new Oakville hospital was also discussed with Burton stating that he does have a plan to pay this balance without raising taxes. One of those (options) is the district energy project in the new hospital dis- trict, said Burton. As the 100-hectares around the new hospital become home to a successful life sciences business park, each building will be able to draw heating, cooling and back- up power from one small cleaner, cheaper, central source. Replacing perhaps 100 dirtier individual furnaces and coolers and generating new income for the Town. Burton said the old hospital site, which the Town secured as part of its deal in making the $200-million local share commitment, may be used as a possible source of revenue for that $200- million balance. While public consultations are cur- rently underway to see what can be done with the land, Burton said that when the existing hospital is vacated this land could be rented back to the Province to create a Seniors Healthcare Centre of Excellence.
