Police said that while wireless computer connections are a convenient and flexible way to access the World Wide Web, if the router is not secure, residents could be leaving their entire network susceptible to infection or data theft. If a person does not have a password protec- tion or encryption for their home network, any- one can utilize their router to get into that per- sons system or hijack that persons signal to get onto the Internet. To ensure home wireless networks are secure from unauthorized access, police recom- mend residents consider the following recom- mendations. Change default administrator passwords and usernames Turn on wireless encryption Change the default SSID (default network name set up by the manufacturer) Disable the SSID broadcast Enable MAC address filtering Enable firewalls on each computer and the router Turn off the network during extended peri- ods of non-use Your Internet provider or router manufac- turer can supply more detailed instructions on how to protect your network. The Halton Police website at www.haltonpo- lice.ca also has helpful links that can assist you in securing and managing your home Internet.
