This year in Ontario, an estimated 8,900 women will be diagnosed with breast cancer, and an estimated 2,100 women will die of the disease. Through this advertising campaign, we are promoting breast screening through regular mammograms. Our hope is that when people see these big pink signs throughout our community, they will take action and make an appointment for a mammo- gram. The ads are an expansion of the Be a Breast Friend project that recruited hair stylists to spread the early detection message to their clients, and encouraged The Alzheimer Society of Hamilton and Halton is seeking candidates to join the Board of Directors. In addition to Directors-at-large, we need individuals with expertise and/or professional skills in accounting, human resources, law, marketing, medicine, and organizational/fi nancial management. The Alzheimer Society of Hamilton and Halton exists to alleviate the personal and social consequences of Alzheimers disease and related dementias in the regions of Hamilton and Halton. We do this through the provision of information, education and support programs and services to individuals and families affected by Alzheimers disease or a related dementia, and through information and education services to professionals and community agencies who work in dementia-related areas. The Board of Directors makes all decisions with respect to overall policy, services and budget. Directors are expected to stay informed about issues related to Alzheimers disease and related dementias, participate in the work of committees, and actively support the fundraising efforts and events of the Board. Membership requires a minimum commitment of three (3) hours per month including attendance at bi-monthly meetings of the Board and participation on Committees of the Board. A Breast Friend can be someone who takes the time for their own breast screening or someone who shares the importance of screening with loved ones. Understanding the impor- tance of regular screening through mammograms and passing that information on to clients as part of our reg- ular conversations is another way we work to keep our clients well-being front and centre, said Cathy Smith, Studio 238, Oakville, one of the stylists participating in the earlier project. Stylists can find out how to be a Breast Friend in their salon by visiting beabreast- friend.ca. Gary Carr Oakvilles Zonta Club members cant imagine giving birth on a dirt floor with no medical assistance and theyre taking Sunday, Oct. 3 to help ensure women in Africa dont have to either. Local members of the service club will be assembling 1,000 birthing kits to be sent to Mali to improve maternal safety in that country. Each kit contains essential tools to aid in hygienic delivery. The assembly will take place from 11 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. at Post Inn Village located at 203 Georgian Dr. (a long- term care home in a subdivision south- west of the junction of Dundas Street and Trafalgar Road. The effort is in support of CAREs Good Health Concerns Us All project. In Mali there is one doctor for every 12,500 people, compared to one for every 470 people in Canada, according to a Zonta Oakville release about Sundays event. The massive dispartity means that often women deliver their babies them- selves in their own homes. Having the tools on hand to ensure a safe delivery can make the difference between life and death for both mother and child, said Susan Hunt, president of the Oakville Zonta Club. Those tools are included in the birthing kit including: a one-metre- square sheet of thick plastic sheeting (to protect mothers from dirt during birthing); a bar of soap, a pair of Latex gloves; three 10-inch pieces of umbili- cal tape; one razor blade; three gauze squares; one six-inch square plastic bag; and, a picture book of instructions. Zonta is an international service club dedicated to advancing the status of women and children locally and internationally. Founded in 1919, Zonta is now active in 66 coun- tries. In addition to the birthing kit project, this year Zonta is working to reduce violence against women in Guatemala and El Salvador, prevent mother- to-infant transmission of HIV and violence against women in Rwanda, and, lower infant and maternal mortality in Liberia. Closer to home, the Oakville Zonta Club actively raises money for womens and childrens support services in Halton. CARE is a leading human- itarian organization actively involved in combating the effects of poverty around the world. CARE has been active in Mali since 1975.
