Albert and Sarah Kim were able to shave one year off university by earning 5 credits each while they were still attending Iroquois Ridge High School. Albert earned his National Advanced Placement (AP) Scholar with Distinction award in 2009, when he graduated high school. A year later, his sister did the exact same thing when she graduated. Sarah was also top of her graduating class with a grade average of 98.7 per cent. Its a phenomenal accomplishment for the students, said Kathryn Patterson, the school AP coordinator. Theyre both very bright, diligent students. AP credits are accepted by more than 3,600 Colleges and Universities worldwide, including 62 Colleges and Universities in Canada, for credit, advanced placement, or both on the basis of successful AP Exam grades. At Iroquois Ridge, students do their AP exams and tutoring on top of their regular school workload. Patterson said students can get mentoring during their lunch break and after school. Some schools offer certain AP-level subjects that can also count towards a students high school edu- cation credits. The program has grown in popularity over the last few years, and students write multiple exams in various subject areas including World History, Economics, Biology, English and Spanish to name just a few, Patterson added, in a press release. Albert is currently at the University of Western Ontario taking computer science, while Sarah is at the University of Toronto in pre-med. MICHELLE SIU / OAKVILLE BEAVER GETTING AHEAD: University students Albert Kim, 19, and Sarah Kim, 18, both received five uni- versity credits for their performance on the National Advanced Placement exams while in high school. Their family moved from Korea when the siblings entered high school to provide a more diverse opportunity for education. Timeless TreasuresWoven for Generations END-OF-SUMMER SALE ON NOW!
