Police said the thefts took place in the daytime between 4 a.m. and 5 p.m. In the case of two homes, thieves entered through unlocked ground floor windows after removing the screens. They stole a phone from the first house and a laptop, briefcase and the keys to a 2001 Toyota Corolla from the second. The keys were then used to steal the vehicle. At the third home, thieves entered through an unlocked patio door, but left after they realized the homeowner was asleep on a nearby couch. They were able to leave the home unde- tected, but the attempted theft was later reported to police when the homeowner awoke and noticed footprints in his kitchen. Police said the suspects concluded their mini crime spree by stealing an iPod from an unlocked car, which was also located on Castlefield Crescent. These are crimes of opportunity, said Sgt. Brian Carr, Halton police public affairs officer. If you lock your vehicle and garage, along with the windows and doors to your home, the likelihood of these incidents is limited considerably. The Halton Regional Police Service is continuing to investigate these incidents and anyone with information related to them is asked to contact the Oakville Criminal Investigations Bureau at 905-825- 4777, ext. 2215 or by calling Crime Stoppers at 1-800-222-TIPS (8477). Open doors invite thieves Halton police are looking a man who reportedly made threatening remarks to a 20- year-old Oakville woman at Woodside Library, 1274 Rebecca St., Tuesday. Police said the incident occurred shortly after 2 p.m. when a woman reading at a table in the library observed a man enter the build- ing and heard him muttering under his breath. As the suspect approached the woman, police said, she realized he was making very violent and vulgar statements. The suspect turned to the woman and told her he had been in jail and had some tattoos. Police said the suspect also made several threatening comments to the woman, which caused her to gather her belongings and move to the front counter where she notified library staff about the situation. The suspect left the library and was seen riding a bicycle towards Rebecca Street. No one was injured during the incident. The suspect is described as male, 40 years old, six feet tall with a slim build, black hair, a dark complexion and dirty looking. He wore a navy blue windbreaker with a white strip, jeans, and a baseball hat. He was also listening to an iPod. The Halton Regional Police Service is investigating this incident. Anyone with infor- mation related to it is asked to contact the Oakville Criminal Investigations Bureau at 905-825-4777, ext. 2215 or Crime Stoppers at 1-800-222-TIPS (8477).
