We are currently distributing more than $100,000 worth of food every month, so we are very grateful more and more people in Oakville are becom- ing aware of the hunger issue that exists in town and wanting to help, says Benjamin Ward, KSM executive direc- tor. Previously called the 5KSM Run for Hope, this years fifth annual edition of the race saw its name changed to the 5KSM Turkey Run in hopes of rallying people in town to participate while also either pledging funds or bringing non- perishable food on race day. Food items can also be dropped off Monday-Friday from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. at KSM located at 485 Kerr Street. This years race starts and finishes at Heritage Square (Kerr Street and Florence Drive), with the race route including a tour of downtown Oakville. With Mayor Rob Burton presiding over the festivities and a turkey mascot leading the pack, the free 1km Childrens Run kicks off at 9 a.m. and the Athletics Canada-certified 5km run starts at 9:30 a.m. The 5km walk is at 9:35 a.m. In addition to all 5km pre-registered participants receiving a free technical t- shirt, new to this years race is an added incentive of a free movie pass, which registrants receive when they refer another runner/walker to the event. Registrations are accepted on Saturday, Oct. 9 from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. at The Running Company, 118 Thomas St. and at the event on race day. Details are at www.5KSMTurkeyRun.com.
