porting the focus of ATHENA Oakville through work in the community, can do so through any of the local groups that Stalker says mirror the work of ATHENA Oakville. Those groups include Big Brothers Big Sisters of Halton, May Court Club of Oakville, Zonta Club of Oakville, Company of Women, Canadian Federation of University Women (CFUW) and Girl Guides. In fact, ATHENA Oakville will help build the bridges as it invites such groups to participate with information booths at its Nov. 3 gala. The gala, being co-chaired this year by Cindy Popp and Mary Jane Howie, will cele- brate women, recognize leadership and introduce the Legacy of ATHENA and Future ATHENA scholarships. This years event will be held at the Oakville Conference Centre, 2515 Wyecroft Rd. and will be emceed by former ATHENA Oakville winner Brenda Zimmerman. At 5:30 p.m., displays from a variety of local groups that, like ATHENA Oakville, also work to celebrate mentoring women as leaders will open the gala that will con- clude at 8 p.m. Proceeds raised will go to the ATHENA Legacy Scholarship Fund. Many WIST graduates have achieved great success with their own businesses. For example, Colleen Thomson who took WIST in 2004 began a business in small ren- ovations and handyperson service. Mary-Catherine Zwambag was in WIST in 2006 and began her own company called Miss Fix It. Meanwhile Marissa McTasney, also a 2006 WIST graduate, established Tomboy Trades Ltd., which went on to distribute work wear for women through Home Depot, Zellers, Walmart and through independent stores across Canada and the U.S. While ATHENA Oakville at first just payed out the scholarship cash, later the Oakville Community Foundation (OCF) was charged with administering the scholarship fund. That OCF administration will continue with the Legacy of ATHENA Oakville Scholarship Fund. Those who wish to donate to the fund, can do so through the OCF. If it grows, the scholarship amount will increase, predicted Stalker.
