The Summer Company Program, developed by the Ontario government, provides hands-on business training and mentoring, together with awards of up to $3,000, to help enter- prising young people start up and run their own sum- mer businesses. The Halton Region Business Develop- ment Centre co-ordinates the program and delivers it through volunteer business mentoring groups. Participants receive at least 12 hours of business training through the Busi- ness Development Centre. They also have regular meetings with the volun- teer mentoring group made up of members of Haltons business community. I am pleased that Halton Region can help our youth hone their entrepreneurial skills and give them the tools to succeed as our fu- ture business leaders, said Halton Regional Chairman Joyce Savoline. The Sum- mer Company Program is one example of how we are building tomorrows workforce by utilizing part- nerships and fostering an environment that encour- ages innovation. Each participant runs their own company, and their products and services range from hand-crafted jewellery and website de- sign to summer camps and chartered fishing trips. The participants are secondary and post-secondary school students between the ages of 15 and 29. Minister of Small Busi- ness and Entrepreneurship Harinder Takhar attended the event to personally congratulate the Summer Company participants. Halton Hills participants were: Ernest Kolenda of Brock University who will oper- ate University Handyman, offering all-around home handyman services in Georgetown. Timothy Kolenda of Brock University who will operate University Car Cleaners, providing car cleaning ser- vices for Halton Golf & Country Club members and others in Georgetown. Timothy recently won third prize in the 2006 Halton Region RBC Business Plan Competition.
