Buzz for Ben haircut kicks off MD campaign He wants pledges and donations to support the Buzz for Ben haircut hell receive on Sept. 2 at noon at the M&M Charity BBQ in the Macs Milk parking lot. At the age of 10, Noah MacDonald knows his cousin Ben, is losing out in his battle to be like other boys. Already, the six-year- old is losing his mobility. He cant run with Noah and his brother Aaron when they go to visit the family in Sault St. Marie. He has to stop often, and he falls frequently. Now Noah has to pull Ben on the toboggan when they go out to play during winter visits. Before too long, Bens going to be in a wheelchair all the time. He has Duschenns, a severe form of MD which only at- tacks males. Noahs mother, Edie MacDonald, says her sons have only begun to under- stand whats happening to their cousin and Noah in particular is determined to do something to help in the fight against Bens illness. He has seen the Jerry Lewis telethon which raises funds for research towards a cure for muscular dystrophy each Labour Day weekend, and wants to do his part for Bens sake. Bens home community holds an annual Breakfast for Ben at the local high school to assist the family with his personal needs, such as a wheelchair. So Noah wants to tackle the other need, the need for a cure so other boys wont be struck down like his little cousin. Noah decided to seek pledges to shave his head. His parents have persuaded him to modify that stance a touch. Instead, hes now going to get a buzz cut, a Buzz for Ben. Nor is Noah alone in his determination to help. His brothers, Jesse, 9, Aaron, 7, and twins Elijah and Jonah, 3, will all be climbing into that chair and baring their scalps to the zinging snip of the hairdressers clippers. Kids are so optimistic at this age, MacDonald says. They dont want to believe there is no cure. They need to try to make a difference. MacDonald says the fam- ily will be in a tent at the M&M Charity barbeque from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. to receive pledges or accept donations. Mandy Dixon of Mandys Hair Creations will be available from noon to 4 p.m. to buzz the locks of anyone else who might want to also Buzz for Ben for $10 a head.
